RFS - Op SPOUSE

THE BRIEF

The CEO had an idea. A big one. A nationwide initiative to tackle one of the MOD’s most persistent problems: retention - and the link family dissatisfaction has with attrition across Defence.

The personnel leaving not because they want to, but because Service life is too hard on the people they love.

The idea was solid. The problem was nobody knew how to position it, communicate it, or take it to the people who could make it real - generals, MOD leaders, and the corridors of Parliament.

That's where I came in.

WHAT I DID

I spent hours in MOD research, policy documents, and defence reports - pulling together the data, the evidence, and the human story underneath it. Then I wove it into something that could land in a room full of decision makers in under five minutes.

The brief was simple and incredibly hard: one page. Clear enough for a general. Compelling enough for Parliament.

I wrote the positioning, the narrative, the 'why now', and the call to action. I built the language around existing MOD commitments and defence priorities so it didn't feel like a pitch - it felt like the obvious next step. Backed by hard data.

From that one page, I built everything else. The Op SPOUSE website. The launch campaign (social, email, press). A printed flyer cascaded at DSEI 2025 - one of the world's largest defence exhibitions. Briefing packs for the Board, with guidance on how to communicate the initiative to influential stakeholders.

I drafted thought-leadership articles on behalf of our leadership team, one of which was picked up and published in The Times.

And biggest of all; I wrote the language for a full presentation for the MD to take into a room of MOD leaders at the British Army - to persuade them to get involved.

She walked in with the deck. She walked out with the pilot.

THE RESULT

Op SPOUSE secured funding from a major military charity within 6 months of the campaign launch - backing a 12 month British Army pilot. The pilot launched April 2026.

From a one-page positioning document, to a national initiative, to a funded Defence pilot.

The best strategic communications doesn’t just explain an idea. It makes the right people feel something. It makes the problem unignorable. The case for action indestructible, and the next steps clear. And that, leads to action.
